How To Provide Literary Criticism In An Essay: 5 Useful Hints

The role of literary criticism in a paper is something that only those who have mastered their art can aptly be able to pull off. Not every other student is able to effectively write a good paper, and using criticism in the correct manner. However, as long as you are able to do it in the right way, there is a good chance that you will hardly ever have to struggle with anything else. The following are some of the most useful things that you need to know about literary criticism in your work:

Read before you critique

Before you ever decide to criticize any work by anyone, it is mandatory that you read through their work carefully and keenly so that you have a very good idea of what they are talking about. It is rather pointless for you to try criticizing the work of any individual, without necessarily taking your time to go through it in detail and understanding what they are talking about.

Study the parts of the literary work properly

Once you have read through it, try and consider the different aspects of their work, and get a clear idea of what it is all about. Think for example of the plot, the introduction, the thesis statements and their conclusion. How have they addressed these sections and the contents? How have these helped develop the main idea that they are advancing through their work?

Have your own interpretation

Once you have done that, the next thing you need to do is to make your own interpretation of their work, pretty much have your criticisms of what they have done. Write these in short sentences that you can read and easily pick up from their work

Summary of your interpretations into concise statements

Take the interpretations that you have written above and try to add a few words to their context, turning them into fine statements that can make sense to anyone who is reading your work. If possible, make these into paragraphs

Prove your criticisms

Once you are through with that, you need evidence to support your claims. After all, before you criticize someone else’s work, it is important for you to have some evidence to back your claims so that you sound credible. Without proper evidence you cannot be able to prove anything from your work.
